The front panel has a micro controller (SyncMOS SM8952AC40), that is always powered up and provides system management functions. It communicates with the main board CPU via a simple serial protocol.

The front panel itself provides several features that are independent of the main board. These are:

  • Infrared sensor.
  • Buttons.
  • VFD display with a number of icons and a dot matrix 10 character display.
    • The display has a buffer for up to 20 characters. When the number of characters to be displayed is greater than 10, the front panel will scroll the text.
  • Real-time hardware clock and calendar, including an alarm function to bring the device out of standby mode.
  • Power sequencing control to turn on/off the main board.
  • Reset control to reset the main board. (Speculation - need to verify this statement.) --- peteru

The USB port and card reader are not part of this front panel, instead they are located on a separate USB daughtercard attached to the fascia. The micro controller used for this purpose is ISSI IC1210-F128LQG
